Task 1 Academic requirements
IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to summarise, compare, or explain visual information in at least 150 words. You should spend about 20 minutes. Task types include line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, tables, maps, and process diagrams.
You are not asked for opinions or conclusions beyond what the data shows. Examiners reward clear overview, logical grouping, and accurate data language.
The four-paragraph model
- Introduction — paraphrase the task prompt (what is shown, over what period).
- Overview — two or three main trends or stages (no specific numbers required here, but big patterns yes).
- Body 1 — detail group A (with figures).
- Body 2 — detail group B (with figures).
The overview is mandatory for Band 7+. Missing it caps Task Achievement.
Writing the overview
Ask: What are the biggest changes or differences?
Example (line graph of energy sources):
Overall, fossil fuels declined steadily while renewable sources grew, and hydro remained the smallest contributor throughout.
Avoid listing every line — select dominant patterns.
Grouping data intelligently
Do not describe the chart line by line in chronological isolation unless only one series exists. Better groupings:
- Highest vs lowest categories
- Similar trends together (both increased until 2010)
- Contrast pairs (Country A vs Country B)
For processes, group stages: input → transformation → output.
Trend and comparison language
| Movement | Verbs | Nouns |
|---|---|---|
| Up | rise, increase, grow, climb | an increase, growth |
| Down | fall, decline, drop, decrease | a fall, a decline |
| Stable | remain stable, level off | stability |
| Fluctuate | fluctuate, vary | fluctuation |
Use adverbs precisely: sharply, gradually, steadily, slightly.
Compare with: higher than, the largest proportion, twice as much as, accounted for.
Numbers and accuracy
Include selected figures to support points — not every datapoint. Round sensibly (about one third, just under 50%). Ensure arithmetic matches the visual — examiners notice contradictions.
Process diagrams
Use passive voice and sequencing:
- First, raw materials are delivered to…
- Following this, the mixture is heated…
- Finally, the product is packaged…
Identify cycles, branches, and parallel steps in the overview.
Maps and plans
Describe changes over time or differences between two maps. Use orientation language (north of, replaced by, was converted into).
Common Task Achievement errors
- Copying the question without paraphrase
- No overview
- Personal opinion (This is worrying)
- Under 150 words — penalised
Mini practice
Take any chart. Write only:
- One-sentence introduction
- Two-sentence overview
Time limit: 5 minutes. Check: Could someone understand main patterns without seeing the chart?
